RECENT SHIAWASSEE NWR SIGHTINGS - July 18, 2014
By: Steve Kahl, Refuge Manager
The drawdown of Pool 1a is attracting a nice mix of waterfowl, wading birds, and fall migrant shorebirds. Scores of Sandhill Cranes, Great Blue Herons, and Great Egrets are feeding on fish trapped in the shallow, receding water. These fish are also attracting many Black-crowned Night-Herons and Green
Herons. Even Bald Eagles are taking advantage of the feast. Shorebirds seen this past week include Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Solitary Sandpiper, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, and Wilson's Snipe. Waterfowl include Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Green-winged Teal, and Blue-winged Teal.
Dickcissels, Sedge Wrens, and Bobolinks are being found every day in the prairie restoration area adjacent to the Bishop Road Wildlife Observation Platform. 1-2 Orchard Orioles are being found along Ferguson Bayou Trail.
Visitors taking advantage of the Wildlife Drive are frequently reporting Caspian and Black Terns, Common Gallinule, Pied-billed Grebe, Eastern Kingbird, American Coot, Trumpeter Swan, Wood Duck and Hooded Merganser w/ broods, Wild Turkey, and Indigo Bunting.
