We've had many nice days with clear skies and south winds and a long list
of spring migrants has arrived, including Pied-billed Grebe, Horned Grebe,
Great Egret, Greater Yellowlegs, Bonaparte's Gull, Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Winter Wren, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Field
Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, and White-throated Sparrow.
The Western Chorus Frogs have been joined by Wood Frogs and Northern
Leopard Frogs. The former can be heard abundantly along Woodland Trail,
Ferguson Bayou Trail and even right next to the parking lot at Green Point
Environmental Learning Center. They won't be calling long though. Wood
Frogs are one of the earliest frogs to start calling, even when ice is
still on the ponds. However, they do not call for a prolonged period like
the Chorus Frogs. In fact, their breeding period usually lasts for just 2-3
weeks. If you sit still next to a wooded wetland you can watch them chasing
after each other.
The first butterfly of the season was seen Wednesday - a Duskywing (most
likely Juvenal's). Eastern Comma has been seen nearby (see pictures) and
Mourning Cloak should be out soon. Thank you Jeff Sommer for sharing
Eastern Comma photos on our Facebook page <
https://www.facebook.com/ShiawasseeNWR?ref=hl>! Note the white "comma"
marking on the underwing.
It is supposed to be partly cloudy and reach 70 degrees Saturday!! Shouldn't
you be getting outside? Come visit us and let us know what you see,
please!!
Thank you for your interest!
