The most surprising bird of the day? A male White-winged Scoter flyover in East Tawas as we were photographing waxwings and robins. I'm sure that it was desperately searching for open water on which to land.
The most unique observation? Watching a Northern Shrike on Keystone Rd dive down into the snow, not once but twice, to pluck out a mouse and fly to the top of a small pine tree for an instant as the mouse dangled from its mouth.
